Baking Potent Edibles
Do you remember your math teacher in high school saying cooking is math, then using a recipe to try to teach conversions? If so, it’s about to come in handy to figure out your CBD dosage recommendation!
When baking with CBD, you’ll want to make sure your recipe contains enough CBD in the whole batch to give you the desired potency per serving. Take your desired CBD edible dosage and multiply it by the number of servings you intend to have. This gives you the total milligrams of CBD you want to include. Your CBD oil offers a set number of milligrams per milliliter of liquid. Divide the total milligrams needed by milligrams per milliliter to get the milliliters of oil you need to have a finished product with the required dose per serving. Finally, when adding your normal cooking oil, subtract the amount of CBD oil you’re baking with. Clear as brownie mix, right?
As an example, let’s make a package of store-bought brownie mix. We’ll assume I have all the ingredients required from the package as well as a 30ml bottle of Core CBD Natural Hemp Oil 1500mg which provides a potent 50mg/ml. Despite the package saying there are 20 servings, I know that it really means 4 big brownies (don’t judge). I want 50mg/ml of CBD per brownie — or whatever mg dosing you choose for your baked good. Let’s start baking with CBD:
- 4 servings X 50mg = 200mg an entire recipe of brownie mix.
- 200mg divided by 50mg/ml = 4ml of CBD oil to add 200mg to my brownie mix.
- ½ cup of cooking oil in the recipe – 4ml of CBD oil = about a teaspoon less than a ½ a cup.
That’s it! Just add the CBD oil the same time you add the cooking oil, and follow the recipe otherwise. Once the brownies are done, you’re ready to dose with your own homemade edibles!

Exposing CBD oil to direct heat can change its composition. You’ll typically see a reduction in efficacy if you let your CBD oil get too hot. Unfortunately, you won’t necessarily know that your CBD oil has been negatively affected until you physically detect the reduced potency. Always avoid frying or sautéing with CBD oil.
2. Baking with CBD oil
Can CBD oil be baked with foods in the oven? Yes, you can bake with CBD. You should be mindful of the temperature setting on your oven. Heating CBD above 120 degrees Fahrenheit could cause it to be altered.
Generally, CBD oil should not be looked at as a “cooking oil” the same way you would view something like olive oil, avocado oil or sunflower oil. CBD oil actually becomes bitter when it’s heated and treated like any type of common cooking oil. CBD oil is much more delicious and beneficial when used as a “finishing” oil. That means that you’ll get the best results when you use CBD oil as a drizzle or blended element.
3. Be mindful about dosages
The last tip for following a CBD oil food recipe is to be mindful about dosage. Don’t just “eyeball” how much CBD you think belongs in a recipe. Make sure you know how many servings you’re whipping up per recipe. Next, carefully measure the amount of CBD needed per serving. Some people like to use the drizzle method even when making larger batches simply because they enjoy being able to control exactly how much CBD is being administered per serving.
Easy and Tasty CBD Oil Food Recipes
Cooking with CBD is easier than you think. You can technically add CBD to anything. For instance, blending a few drops into your jam or butter before eating your toast in the morning is a simple way to eat your CBD. However, you may want to get a little more sophisticated. Here’s a look at some simple CBD recipes that don’t require any serious cooking skills!
No-Bake CBD Granola Bars
- 1 1/2 cups of rice cereal.
- 2 1/4 cups of quick oats.
- 6 tablespoons of butter.
- 1/3 cup of light brown sugar (packed).
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.
- 1/2 cup of miniature chocolate chips.
- Line a 9-inch square pan with parchment paper to prepare. Next, place your rice cereal and oats in a bowl. You’ll then add the butter, brown sugar and honey to a microwave-safe bowl. Heat your mixture on a high setting for about a minute. Stir the mixture to fully melt the butter once you remove it from the microwave. Put the mixture back in the microwave for 1 1/2 minutes.
- Stir the vanilla into the mixture upon removing it from the microwave. Next, pour the dry mixture over the heated mix before stirring gently to ensure that the entire surface is coated in rice cereal and oats. You can now pour the full mixture onto the pan you’ve prepared ahead of time. Go ahead and press the mixture into the pan evenly using your hands.
- Next, sprinkle your chocolate chips on top of the mixture. You can press them in gently to ensure they stay in place. You can also now drizzle your pre-measured CBD oil, for example Hemp Bombs CBD Oil with Watermelon, over the surface of the bars. Do your best to drizzle the right amount of dosage per bar by dividing the batch into single bars in your mind. Place the bars in the refrigerator for between 60 and 120 minutes. Cut when ready!
Easy CBD Vinaigrette
- 1/2 cup of extra-virgin olive oil.
- 3 tablespoons of balsamic vinegar.
- 1 tablespoon of Dijon mustard.
- 1 tablespoon of honey.
- 1 minced garlic clove.
- 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt.
- Ground black pepper (to taste).
Combine all of the ingredients in a bowl. Next, add your CBD oil (like CBDistillery CBD Oil 500mg). Stir using a whisk or fork until you see that everything has been fully blended. This vinaigrette will keep for up to seven days. The full recipe yields about six 2-tablespoon servings. Keep that in mind as you calculate your CBD dosage per serving.
Simple and Sweet CBD Fruit Smoothie (One of the Easiest CBD Isolate Recipes)
- 1 whole banana.
- 4 large frozen strawberries.
- A handful of ice.
- 1/4 cup of almond or coconut milk.
Add all of the ingredients to a blender or bullet mixer. Next, add in your CBD isolate (You may like Pure Spectrum CBD Isolate Powder). Blend until you get a frothy, even consistency.

Tips for Cooking with CBD Oil
When incorporating CBD into any food dish, you’ll want to avoid disrupting the consistency of the final food product. To do this, use oil sparingly. If you want a stronger dose of CBD, don’t increase the amount of oil, just use a CBD oil with a higher potency (such as a 1,000mg tincture).
Try to steer clear of putting the CBD oil on direct heat while cooking, as this can remove critical cannabinoids and terpenes that elicit the synergistic effect of CBD. The first thing to know when cooking or baking with CBD is that it begins to break down somewhere between 320 and 356 degrees Fahrenheit. This means that heating the oil too high can result in the loss of beneficial cannabinoids and may decrease the efficacy of the CBD.
If you plan on adding CBD oil to anything that you’d cook on a stovetop, a good trick is to remove the saucer or pan from heat and allow the contents to cool for a minute or so, then stir in your desired amount of CBD oil.
When it comes to baking with CBD, like with a granola bar or chocolate chip cookie recipe, it is easier to manage the temperature by preheating the oven (preferably no higher than 350 degrees Fahrenheit).
No-Heat CBD Recipes
If you’re still concerned about losing any CBD potency during the cooking or baking process, you’re not alone. After much research and consideration, even I was a little wary about my ability to properly mix CBD into a full-on dinner dish. So when I started incorporating CBD into foods, I decided to dip my toes into the water before jumping in head first. In order to do that, I created a few easy recipe options that don’t require any heat (but still allow you to reap the benefits of ingesting CBD).
Lemon, Garlic, & CBD Salad Dressing
I’ve only recently taken a liking to healthier salads, and making a CBD-infused dressing is one of the easiest no-heat recipes. If you’re in a pinch, you can always add a few drops of hemp oil to a basic vinaigrette or even a pre-made salad dressing. Although I am a big fan of making my own salad dressing using just a few ingredients.
The end result for this recipe is a refreshing salad dressing that I enjoy most on a classic house or summer salad. (One of the best CBD oils for this recipe is Naternal since it has a light and nutty taste that pairs well with the other ingredients.)
- 3 tablespoons of olive oil
- 1 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon of CBD oil (such as Naternal)
- Pepper to taste
How to Make It:
Whisk all ingredients together until fully incorporated. Shake well and drizzle onto a salad.
Fresh CBD Guacamole
Who doesn’t love to dip their tortilla chips into fresh guacamole? I know I do, and I’ve found that avocados and CBD oil are a great combination, especially when it comes to making a tasty guac that you and your friends will love. The list and instructions below are slightly modified from one of MyRecipe’s homemade guacamole recipes, with a few added ingredients for my own flavor preferences.
This is the perfect recipe to get creative with. There’s always the option to customize your guac with other ingredients, like jalapenos for spice or mangos for sweetness—it’s all up to you! (For this recipe, Medterra is a good option since it is unflavored and won’t disrupt the delicate flavor profile of the guacamole.)
- 2 ripe avocados
- 1 tablespoon of fresh lime juice
- 1 ripe tomato, diced
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 garlic clove, minced
- Salt and pepper to taste
- CBD oil in desired strength (such as Medterra)
How to Make It:
Cut avocados, remove pits, and scoop out flesh.
In a medium sized bowl, add CBD oil, lime juice, and minced garlic to the avocado. Mash with fork until fully incorporated (mixture should look creamy but still chunky).
Add tomato, onion, salt and pepper.
Adjust the taste with additional salt, peppers and/or lime juice.
CBD-Infused Strawberry Banana Smoothie
I’m always an advocate for smoothies. Whether I make one for breakfast or an afternoon snack, these tasty treats are a great way to get an array of nutrients in one beverage. Plus, adding a dropper full of CBD oil to your favorite smoothie concoction is a quick and easy way to reap the benefits of CBD. Below is a recipe of my own making, with a simple pairing of a classic duo—strawberry and banana—and an added kick of CBD.
When making this smoothie, you can really use as much CBD oil as you want. I simply use one dropper of my favorite FAB CBD oil (typically the 1200mg berry-flavored tincture, although the citrus or vanilla flavor would also work well with this recipe) because that’s what works best for me! Note: I do recommend experimenting with the CBD dosage and other ingredients to find the perfect smoothie blend for your preferences.
