CBD Oil for Horses

Cannabidiol or CBD is a therapeutic cannabinoid found in cannabis plants and lends its name to a type of extract that’s derived from the flowers. More specifically, CBD is derived from Cannabis sativa L plants — an umbrella term that includes both hemp and marijuana plants. While called CBD, the heavy majority of CBD products contain the full range of compounds found in cannabis which includes cannabinoids like CBD as well as other beneficial compounds like terpenes and flavonoids.

CBD is largely derived from hemp plants, because unlike its cousin, marijuana, hemp lack high amounts of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) which gives marijuana its signature high. When you pluck most of the THC away from cannabis plants, they can no longer cause a high and they become incredibly safe for us, and our pets. Essentially, CBD from hemp plants lets you take advantage of medical marijuana’s benefits, but without the high.

What Is Cannabis?

Before we move on, let’s go over why we should rethink the word cannabis. Both hemp and marijuana are cannabis plants with the same compounds, however, they occur in different ratios. As such cannabis doesn’t always equal a psychoactive high. While all cannabis plants have therapeutic benefits, Hemp lacks THC making it safe and non-intoxicating for pets.

Is There A Difference In Hemp Oil And CBD Oil?

There are three basic consumable extracts that come from cannabis plants: Hemp CBD extracts, Marijuana extracts, and Hemp Seed oil. Where the first two come from the flowers of the plant, hemp seed oil — commonly called hemp oil — comes from the seeds.

Hemp oil does not contain cannabinoids like CBD like the other extracts, but it does contain beneficial omega fatty acids and antioxidants that help cardiovascular, immune, and skin health. As well, it’s completely safe and extremely beneficial to horses.

Hemp seed oil is a vital part of CBD oil because it gives the cannabinoids a fat to bind to which makes it much easier for the body to absorb.

In summary: CBD oil = Hemp CBD extract + Hemp seed oil (or another MCT oil).

How Does CBD Work?

Right now, you’re probably thinking, “how can CBD help my horse with so many things, this sounds like snake oil!” What’s beautiful about CBD is when you understand a little science behind it, everything makes sense.

CBD products like CBD for horses help supplement the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). This is a regulatory messaging system that produces its own cannabinoids like CBD to ensure other regulatory functions in the body are performing properly.

Regulatory systems — like the immune or nervous system — are your horse’s first-line-of-defense against disease, infections, stress, you name it. But all of those things can severely wear those systems down, leading to several health issues.

The ECS’ job is to keep regulatory systems going strong when under intense pressure, and mainly works to help processes that regulate sleep, mood, pain, immunity, appetite, and even fertility.

Unfortunately, the ECS can’t always produce enough endocannabinoids to keep up with whatever is causing the body stress. When this happens, your horse may become hypersensitive to pain, inflammation, allergies, nervousness, and on.

Since plant cannabinoids can do the same job endocannabinoids can, supplementing the ECS with them helps the ECS better carry out its job. Especially if one of the regulatory systems is really struggling.

All mammals have their own ECS, and it plays a role in several regulatory systems throughout the body. This means CBD can help improve health, in both big and small on a cellular level.

Does CBD Get You High & Is CBD Legal?

We are excited to say that hemp-derived CBD products are legal in the United States and much of the world because they don’t cause a high.

When cannabis contains low levels of marijuana’s signature compound, THC, it has significantly different effects on the body. There is no high, none of the associated side effects like dry mouth or paranoia, and it’s safe where marijuana is rather dangerous to certain animals like dogs.

Hemp plants that contain 0.3% THC or less are legally labeled “industrial hemp” and CBD products from these plants are smooth sailing for all animals.

The Health Aid That’s Changed Everything

It’s the big health aid that’s on the tip of everyone’s tongue. By now, you’ve likely heard about the health benefits of CBD for us, and perhaps, for our dogs and cats. If you haven’t, CBD is offering millions the extra TLC they need to combat the daily wear-and-tear of life.

For some, it helps support their anxiety or helps with pain relief, for others it helps them combat the side effects of chemo, and for many, it’s been a lifesaver by managing drug-resistant forms of epilepsy.

Hemp CBD is an amazing health aid that many find irreplaceable, and we want to show you how it can greatly improve your horse’s health and wellbeing.

Horses are irreplaceable members of our society and for centuries have helped make the lives of humans easier. It’s time we give back!

Whether you’re looking to get a leg up on the competition, help support your horse’s mobility, or just want to protect them against common health issues, we’re here to show you how CBD can help. We’ll also cover questions like what are CBD side effects, how much CBD do I give my horse, and more.

Alternatives to CBD Oil For Horses

A great thing about CBD is its ability to adapt to different forms that can offer certain advantages over other forms.

For example, we offer Equine CBD Hemp Pellets that are incredibly easy to give — just mix it in with their regular feed and CBD’s flavor is completely masked.

We also offer a highly concentrated CBD Calming Paste designed to deliver high doses of CBD that kick in faster to help support and maintain occasional anxiousness and the healthy structure of joint tissues.

Check Out Our List of Guidelines To Follow When Buying CBD:

  • Organic: Hemp has phytoremediation properties with the ability to clean up toxic spills. That’s why it’s so important to only buy CBD derived from organic hemp that’s grown free of pesticides and other toxic chemicals.
  • Extraction Method: There are several different ways to extract CBD, including methods that use dangerous solvents that leave a residue. CO2 solventless extraction is, without a doubt, the preferred method producing purest and safest CBD concentrate.
  • Certificate of Analysis (COA): A COA is the guaranteed analysis of the CBD product. It’s undertaken by an independent lab and will show the accurate amount of the main cannabinoids and terpenes. Make sure your CBD product has one and that the label matches the results.
  • Inactive Ingredients: Make sure to read the back of the label for other ingredients that aren’t CBD or a carrier oil. Almost all CBD oils will have a carrier oil such as coconut or hemp seed oil in it.
  • Full or Broad Spectrum: It’s highly recommended that you use a CBD product that is their broad or full-spectrum, meaning it includes the terpenes and flavonoids also found in hemp. These additional compounds greatly improve the overall benefits.

We’re proud to say that we uphold our standards to the highest practices and that’s why our full spectrum organic hemp CBD extract has been CO2 extracted and tested by an independent lab for the highest purity and potency.

How Can CBD Oil Help my Horse?

Hemp CBD has opened up a new world in the way we can care and support our horses’ health. Whether that’s using CBD as an anxiety aid to help calm occasional anxiousness or using CBD to support their mobility and joint function. CBD can offer support to all horses in some way. In our two decades in animal health and wellness, we’ve never seen anything quite as unique and special as hemp CBD. It’s given many horse owners the ability to care for their horse’s health without having to worry about the side effects that can come from prescription medications.

CBD offers one of the major keys to long-term wellness, and that’s taking care of it on a day-to-day basis by promoting inward balance and functional health. And it does this naturally by supplementing the ever-important endocannabinoid system. We created CBD oil for horses because we saw how Hemp CBD helped our fur children and knew we had to tell pet owners everywhere about this amazing plant.

The way that CBD Oil scientifically affects your horse is through a system that is in mostly all mammals known as the endocannabinoid system. This system is responsible for keeping all the other systems in the body functioning normally. Whether it’s the cardiovascular system, digestive system, respiratory system, etc… they can all use a helping hand from our endocannabinoid system.

The way this specifically works is that there are certain receptors that the cannabinoids attach to within the bodies of mammals and it can be activated naturally or by supplementing with CBD Oil. When we use Hemp Extracted CBD we are removing the chance of any THC, which is the psychoactive compound, binding to the receptors. Knowing this we may positively influence the endocannabinoid system by supplementing CBD Oil.

Mostly all CBD Oils that are made are safe for mammals, but there are ways in which we can improve the likelihood of its effectiveness, like making sure that the source from which it is coming from is top notch. When manufacturers, like ourselves, use Organic Hemp grown with strict care it can definitely improve its quality. Sourcing from reliable sources allows for the process to be clean from the beginning of its production.

One factor that can make the world of difference is the type of cannabis plant that they extract their oil from. There are two notable plants that are used for CBD extraction which are Hemp and Marijuana plants. Hemp contains much lower traces of THC which is the psychoactive ingredient. This THC needs to be filtered out in order to be put into CBD oils for sale online so if you go with a higher quality plant from the beginning it will allow for a more effective and clean product. When this kind of processing is done it allows for a more safe and high quality oil for your pet.

The major misconception that causes people to question CBD oils legality is the fact that it comes from cannabis plants that are associated with marijuana. All strains of these cannabis plants have different ratios that play a role in its legality. When there are high traces of THC in the mix, it is considered to be an illegal substance because this is what causes the high in marijuana users. When the plants are bred to have a large amount of CBD and virtually no THC, it is legal. This is why we only use the highest quality Hemp Extracts in order to make our products.

We’ve mentioned before that we prefer CBD oils because they make administering precise dosages effortless, and it’s the easiest way to find out how much CBD a horse needs. Remember, all horses are unique and this along with the severity of their condition can greatly affect the amount of CBD you should give them.

Fortunately, it’s not a complete guessing game as your horse’s weight will give you a dosage you can start with and work from there. There is no unsafe amount of CBD you can give your horse, but we’ve found that lower and medium dosages are often all that’s needed and they don’t risk making your horse tired like high dosages can.

We break individual/single CBD dosages into three tiers based on the horse’s weight, and each has its advantages.

Low Tier Single Dose (0.009 mg/lb or 0.02 mg/kg):

This is where we recommend you start and you can keep your horse here while CBD builds up in their system which takes a week or two. If using CBD for preventative health or overall wellness, this is a great dosage range to stay in.

Average Tier Single Dose (0.041 mg/lb or 0.09 mg/kg):

By the name you can guess that this is the most popular dosage as it greatly helps with most conditions without making them feel tired.

Strong Tier Single Dose (0.228 mg/lb or 0.5 mg/kg):

Our CBD Oil for horses comes into two concentration sizes so it’s just as easy to give a precise dosage to a pony as it is a draft horse. Our 750mg is suited to smaller horses and ponies, while our 1500mg is better for larger horses that require more CBD. Same great CBD oil, one just has more CBD.

CBD has taken the health world by storm. One reason is the long list of health issues it can help with. The other reason is CBD’s lack of side effects. There is a significant and growing body of research that shows CBD oil can replace many conventional medications that come with harsh side effects. In most cases, side effects are never seen with CBD.

In the rare cases when side effects are seen, they are fairly mild e.g. nausea and tiredness with high dosages (completely harmless). There is only one major side effect to pay attention to, and that is CBD’s ability to interfere with certain drugs metabolized in the liver. If your horse is on such a drug, we advise you talk to your veterinarian about CBD before using. This interaction is not uncommon as foods such as grapefruit and kale do the same.

When looking for the perfect Hemp or CBD product to give your Horse, you need to make sure that is of the highest quality and standard. In order to do this kind of research you are going to want to check a couple of factors to see if the one you decide to purchase hits these marks. The list of important factors will be listed below:

Organic: Hemp has phytoremediation properties with the ability to clean up toxic spills. That’s why it’s so important to only buy CBD derived from organic hemp that’s grown free of pesticides and other toxic chemicals.

Extraction Method: There are several different ways to extract CBD, including methods that use dangerous solvents that leave a residue. CO2 solventless extraction is, without a doubt, the preferred method producing purest and safest CBD concentrate.

The Innovet Story

Matt and Dave started Innovet in 2005 making health care products for pets. By 2015, they had done some research on CBD but at that time, it seemed like a product that was just too good to be true. Matt set it aside, thinking that the hype simply couldn’t all be legitimate and never gave it another thought until Gordo became sick. Gordo was his bulldog who had been diagnosed with lymphoma. He went in for his first treatment and had a horrible reaction to his first chemotherapy. He wasn’t eating and wasn’t being himself at all. His health went downhill fast and Dave was desperate to get the necessary help for Gordo. He searched for everything and anything that might help with cancer-related symptoms, and CBD was again brought to his attention. He found some that looked good, paid extra for overnight shipping, and sadly, it arrived 5 days later – the same day that Gordo passed away, taking his last breaths in Matt’s arms. Subsequently, the CBD bottle was left sitting on a desk at the Innovet warehouse.

Matt’s dog, Maximus, was 16 years old, blind and also battling cancer at the time. He spent most of his days in a dog bed at the warehouse, so that Matt could keep him nearby at all times. In the hopes of ensuring that he had tried everything possible, Matt saw the CBD bottle and decided to give some to Maximus. At that point, Matt was almost certain that Maximus was close to death. He had no hope that it would help because Maximus was so old and hadn’t been able to stand up or eat on his own since Gordo had gotten sick. Matt simply couldn’t imagine losing Gordo and Maximus within days of each other but that fate seemed inevitable. 30 minutes later, Maximus was missing. Everyone at the warehouse all spread out in search of Maximus and found him in a part that he had never been in before. We were shocked to find that Maximus was alert, wagging his tail and eagerly trying to sniff out food. Matt brought him back to his dog bed where we discovered what happened: Maximus had stood up on Maximus had stood up on his own, ate all his food and had ventured into the warehouse in search of more!! That was the day we knew that CBD wasn’t all hype. It really did work. Matt believes that CBD gave him more treasured months with Maximus having a good quality of life. His only regret is that he hadn’t given CBD a chance sooner. Dave and Matt immediately went to work to source the highest quality full spectrum CBD from organic hemp and soon after PurCBD Oil was born. Throughout the last 3 years, we’ve proved that top quality CBD can be both affordable and easily accessible.

Cbd oil for horses with seizures

Table of Contents

In recent years it has come to light that CBD oil is extremely effective in treating seizures in humans. In fact, there have been documented cases where seizures have been reduced by as much as 50% by the judicious administration of CBD. But what about our 4 legged friends? And in particular, horses. Can CBD help horses struggling with seizure disorders?

Happily, the answer is “yes.” Although the causes of equine seizures vary and are sometimes hard to pin down, horses often respond positively to CBD treatment. It’s an exciting development and one that promises to open new avenues of low-impact, high-effectiveness treatment for these most noble of animals.

Equine Seizures: The Big Picture

As we mentioned, there is more than one cause of equine seizures. According to veterinarian Dr. Joyce Harmon, seizures in horses have a variety of possible causes, including tumors, chemical toxins, head trauma, rabies and more. But in some instances – as is often the case with humans – the cause will remain a mystery for the duration of the horse’s life.

Another thing to keep in mind is that seizures can sometimes be confused with other disorders, including but not limited to, narcolepsy and cataplexy. In a general sense, however, equine seizures can be divided into two broad categories: epileptic and non-epileptic. Let’s take a closer look at those different categories now:

Epileptic Seizures

According to Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Robert Ogelsby, equine epilepsy is actually a fairly common affliction. Epileptic seizures in horses vary in intensity, and if the horse does not receive adequate treatment, they may wind up injuring themselves or others during a seizure.

In extreme cases, horses will actually collapse to the ground, stiffen, shake and lose consciousness, much like people do. In other cases, the ears or tail of the horse may begin to tremble, its jaw may stiffen, and its eyes may seem to glaze over and stare into the distance. No matter the severity, it’s a disturbing thing to see.

Non-epileptic Seizures

A horse may experience other types of seizures as well. In some cases, these may have some of the characteristics of epilepsy, but actually be caused by something else. During these episodes, the horse will likely not lose consciousness, but may be unsteady on their feet. Make sure you take careful note of everything the horse is going through, and relay the symptoms to the vet. This will help them make a more accurate diagnosis. Here are some of the symptoms to look for:

  • Shaking or trembling as if they’re cold.
  • A glazed look in their eyes.
  • A firmly clenched jaw for no apparent reason.
  • Excessive sweating.
  • Abnormal mouth activity.
  • Tensing up of the leg muscles.
  • Loss of bowel control.
  • Loss of bladder control.
  • A sense of confusion or being lost.
  • Shaking or trembling of the head.

To see what it looks like when a horse suffers a seizure, take a look at this YouTube video. We must warn you though, the video may be disturbing for some viewers.

The Role of Diet in Seizures

Some owners suspect that the seizures their horse is experiencing is somehow related to diet. And there may be something to that, according to Dr. Kathleen Crandaell, an equine nutritionist. According to Dr. Crandell, horses, like people, can experience the phenomenon known as being “hangry” (hungry and angry) when they’re blood sugar levels crater. In some horses, seizures may accompany the blood sugar crash.

The EES (Equine Endocannabinoid System) In Horses

In the late 20th century, a series of breakthrough discoveries confirmed the existence of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) in humans. At the time, however, restrictive laws related to all manner of hemp products made it difficult to get funding to explore the potential of the ECS. Nonetheless, that discovery got animal lovers wondering if their dog or cat or even their horse also possessed a similar system. And the answer is that it does.

Science Weighs in on the Issue

A wide-ranging study published in 1999 looked at the role of the ECS in animals. It was found that only insects lacked some version of an ECS, and that this regulatory system could be traced back hundreds of millions of years in the fossil record. The study concluded that all animals are designed, so to speak, to be receptive to cannabinoids. And that cannabinoids play a role in modulating movement, enhancing memory, and controlling pain in animals, including horses.

This landmark study sent ripples across the medical and veterinary landscapes. But again, because the laws of the day were very restrictive when it came to hemp and hemp derivatives (i.e. marijuana), all vets could do was wonder about the potential of CBD for animal disorders and health conditions.

The Dawn of a New Day

As we turned the page into the new century, however, those narrow-minded and restrictive laws began to fall by the wayside. As fresh data began to roll in, professionals like Dr. Juliet Getty recognized that the endocannabinoid system of the horse responded to CBD in much the same way the human ECS does. This had implications for the treatment of myriad health conditions afflicting horses, including seizures.

The Dosing Issue: A Step by Step Process

So now we know horses have their own version of the ECS, referred to by vets as the EES. We also know that CBD is effective in treating seizures in humans and other animals. What we still need to determine is the right dose for treating equine seizures.

While it may seem that the age-old maxim of basing a dose on the animal’s size and age should apply, unfortunately that is not the case. Also, potency in CBD products can be somewhat hit or miss, according to Professor of Neurology Dr. Jerzy Szaflarski. “The concentrations in products are only approximate, and I don’t know how well they’re tracked,” he says. So with that in mind, let’s go through the dosing procedure one step at a time:

  • Step 1: Determine a baseline – Regardless of the size, sex or age of your horse, it is suggested that you start with 40mg of CBD per day.
  • Step 2: Determine your step size – That is, decide how much of a step upward you will take during the process. Generally, it is recommended each step be in 20mg increments.
  • Step 3: Begin administration at baseline dosage – Begin administering the baseline amount of 40mg CBD per day. Administer this dosage for one week, while carefully monitoring your horse and noting any changes. 7 days is necessary because CBD has a cumulative effect.
  • Step 4: Step up the dosage – If, after 7 days, you are not satisfied with the results, it will be time to increase the dosage by 20mg. Continue with this dosage (now 60mg per day) for 3 days this time. Again being careful to note any changes in your horse.
  • Step 5: Increase again if necessary – If after 3 days at 60mg per day your horse is still not experiencing the benefits of the CBD therapy, increase the dosage again by another step. Stay at this new baseline level (80mg) for another 3 days, carefully monitoring your horse. If after 3 days you need to increase the dose again, take it up another 20mg and keep it there for a further 3 days.

Continue on this path until you reach the dosage at which your horse shows improvement. And be patient. It’s possible that it may take several weeks to find the right dosage for your horse. Don’t lose patience and overload their system with an enormous dose.

  • Step 6: Refining the dosage – When you reach that happy point where your horse is responding the way you hoped to the CBD, your job then becomes one of refinement. For the sake of your horse, you can and should take your time with this step. Leave things where they are for a while and then, if you think a smaller dose is called for, back off in 5mg increments, 3 days at a time until you find the right balance.

CBD Dosage for Horses

HOW MUCH CBD OIL DO I GIVE MY HORSE?

One dropper of HEAL contains the average effective daily dose for senior animals and those suffering chronic conditions.

IMPORTANT: Sensitivity to CBD oil ranges from case to case, independent of weight and size of the animal.

Dosage is most effectively determined with consideration for each animal’s unique physiological condition. This includes characteristics such as their endocannabinoid system, age, metabolism, disease process, current ailments and other individual health factors.

During the first few weeks, we recommend a trial and error method as you monitor your animal’s response and determine optimal dose.

How To Administer

  1. Shake the bottle before each use.
  2. Apply the oil directly to the gums, or as close as possible.
  3. Wipe the dropper clean after use to prevent contamination.
  4. Store in a cool, dark place.

Split the total daily dose into 2-3 smaller doses to maintain consistent blood concentration levels.

According to preliminary research, blood concentration after oral administration typically reaches peak levels after 2 hours and is mostly eliminated within 6-8 hours.

TRY KEEPING A DAILY JOURNAL TO TRACK YOUR ANIMAL’S RESPONSE.

  1. Keep a log of the dose in milligrams (mg) of hemp.
  2. Record some information about how they respond (eg. energy levels, mobility, symptom relief, sleep patterns etc.).
  3. Adjust accordingly.

If you’re worried about giving too much, rest assured; Research shows that hemp is extremely safe for your animal, even at incredibly high doses.

CBD Benefits for Horses

CBD OIL FOR EQUINE COLIC

CBD can help reduce the abdominal pain many horses experience with colic. Hemp can also help reduce any stress and/or anxiety our horse is feeling. This is particularly important when our horses are already displaying symptoms of stress and anxiety as they could lead to more severe conditions. There are also a significant number of endocannabinoid receptors in the gut resulting in the ability for hemp to balance gut bacteria AKA the microbiome for horse colic.

IS CBD SAFE FOR HORSES?

Hemp extract is extremely safe, even at high levels. The most common, however unlikely, effects you may see are sleepiness or loose stools/diarrhea. Bodily injury as a result of hemp consumption is highly unlikely.

HOW IS CBD DOG HEALTH DIFFERENT FROM OTHER BRANDS?

CBD Dog Health products are formulated specifically for pets by Angela Ardolino, a medical cannabis expert, under the advisement of chemists and veterinarians.

Our CBD products are made with American, hemp grown organically without the use of pesticides rather than using industrialized hemp oil from other countries.

Additionally, CBD Dog Health products are full-spectrum CBD rich-hemp extracts – not isolate, distillate, or products labeled “pure CBD” or “No THC.” Full-spectrum means that no cannabinoids were removed during the extraction or manufacturing process. Our CBD oils include numerous cannabis compounds, including a small amount of THC (0.3% or less).

CBD Dog Health products are rigorously tested by third party labs to ensure consistency and purity from contaminants

The essential oils used in CBD Dog Health products are pure, sourced organically in the U.S., and our CBD-rich products are derived from high-resin cannabis grown sustainably in accordance with the certified regenerative organic standards.

Pet owners know exactly what they are getting with CBD Dog Health products. Our bottles indicate the amount of CBD and hemp oil per serving – not just the total cannabinoid content for the entire bottle.
