CBD Oil For Dogs and Cats

CBD, or cannabidiol, is one member of a family of molecules (called cannabinoids) that naturally occur in Cannabis plants. The bodies of mammals also make related compounds, called endocannabinoids, which modulate numerous important processes in the nervous system. As research into the endocannabinoid system is still in its infancy compared to the study of other biochemical systems in the body, we do not yet have a complete picture of all of its roles and the full therapeutic potential of plant-derived cannabinoids.

Is it legal?

Due to the dynamic status of industrial hemp and marijuana at both the federal and state level, the issue of legality is a confusing one. While the FDA recently declared CBD derived from industrial hemp (defined as Cannabis sativa L. plants containing less than 0.3% THC) federally legal, CBD derived from marijuana (Cannabis sativa L. plants that contain more than 0.3% THC) is still federally illegal. As no legally defined process for certifying the source of a specific CBD product has yet been established, there is no way at this point to differentiate legal from illegal CBD. Hopefully, the FDA, USDA, and DEA will clarify this situation soon. Adding to the confusion, a few states still classify all CBD as illegal regardless of its source.

Could my pet benefit from CBD?

In humans, ongoing research suggests CBD is effective in treating seizure disorders, nausea, anxiety, pain, and inflammation. Last year the FDA approved a CBD-based prescription medication called Epidiolex for two forms of human epilepsy. Research is ongoing, and additional pharmaceutical formulations will likely be brought to market in the future.

So far there is little research into the potential benefits of CBD in animals. A 2018 study found that 2 mg/kg of CBD given twice daily was effective in reducing pain associated with arthritis in dogs. A 2019 study found that adding 2.5 mg/kg of CBD twice daily to their current medications mildly improved seizure control in epileptic dogs with breakthrough seizures. The authors suggest that higher doses should be studied to see if greater improvements in epilepsy management are possible.

Is CBD safe?

CBD appears to be well-tolerated in dogs. At 2.5 mg/kg twice daily, two of twelve dogs in the epilepsy study developed temporary ataxia (incoordination). At higher doses (5-10 mg/kg twice daily), dogs often develop diarrhea. No side effects were reported in the arthritis study. CBD administration in dogs does cause an increase in one liver enzyme, called ALP. The significance of this elevation has not been determined. No studies have yet been performed in cats or other species.

What if I want to try CBD for my pet?

There are a few important things to keep in mind if you are going to try one of the many pet CBD products on the market. First and foremost, there is no guarantee with any of these products that they contain the amount of CBD claimed on the label. This is because the supplement market is not tightly regulated like the pharmaceutical market, and whenever a new supplement becomes popular, many disreputable products appear. In fact, when the FDA recently evaluated 38 over-the-counter CBD products (including several marketed specifically for pets), 34 of the products contained either negligible amounts of CBD or none at all. Only 4 products actually contained approximately the amount of CBD claimed on their labels.

When evaluating a product, look for a Certificate of Analysis (COA) confirming its contents from an independent testing lab (ideally one that meets ISO 17025 standards and uses methods validated by the AOAC, AHP, or USP.) A reputable company will have a COA available to consumers. Also check the origin of the industrial hemp used to manufacture the product. Industrial hemp grown in the US or Canada has the lowest risk of containing potentially dangerous contaminants.

If you do select a product to try on your pet, do not exceed the doses found to be safe in the studies mentioned above. Monitor your pet closely following their first few doses and seek veterinary attention immediately if any adverse effects develop.

Let our highly trained and experienced team of veterinarians and veterinary technicians help you keep your dog as happy and healthy as they can be.

Natural Supplement Corner

The condition of holistic health is defined as the unlimited and unimpeded free flow of life force energy through body, mind, and spirit. It includes analysis of physical, nutritional, environmental, emotional, spiritual and lifestyle elements.

Lovable Pets provides our customers with a comprehensive selection of holistic pet supplements to help increase the quality of life of their pets, and help prevent disease and illness. Ask any of our staff members for help in choosing the right formula(s) for your pet. If your pet has a serious illness, and you would like to integrate any of these natural modalities to complement his or her treatment, we recommend that you work with your veterinarian in this process.

The use of common medicinal herbs may have therapeutic value for mild health issues. Medicinal herbs can be used alone or in conjunction with allopathic medicine. As people are becoming more aware of the need to tend to their own health and the health of their pets, herbs are a natural choice. Unlike pharmaceutical drugs that list pages of potential risks and side effects, herbs have few (if any) side effects. Herbs work gently to support the body. For example, peppermint mixed with ginger is a wonderful tonic for nausea. Marshmallow root, slippery elm and licorice are a great combo to ease diarrhea and digestive discomfort. Milk thistle is scientifically proven to protect the liver. We all know echinacea boosts the immune system, and it does the same for dogs and cats.

While herbs are generally safe, for more serious health problems, we recommend working with a veterinarian experienced in herbs, or an experienced practitioner of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine.

Flower Essences

Flower Essences are completely natural, delicate yet powerful preparations that can be remarkably effective at correcting or adjusting extreme or out of balance emotional reactions. These very dilute liquid preparations contain the energy signatures (or “essences”) of various healing flowers. Each flower essence addresses a specific emotional state, and when taken, gently works to bring that emotion back into healthy balance. They are non-toxic, non-habit-forming, have no negative side effects, and cannot be overdosed.

According to Aldaron Essences, flower essences are all about balance, and we should always strive for balance in all areas of our dogs’ lives. With that in mind, it’s important to note that flower essences work best when the needs of the whole dog are met including veterinary care, diet, exercise and training.

Medicinal Mushrooms

We are not talking about the mushrooms you buy at the supermarket–you know, the kind you put on your pizza, or cheeseburger. We’re talking about “medicinal” mushrooms that have been used for centuries by various cultures around the world for medicinal purposes. They are not easy to find, but Lovable Pets carries two of the safest, most respected brands available for pets today.

According to Ihor Basko, DVM, CVA, modern research backs up what ancient healers and scientists learned through practical experience – studies indicate that medicinal mushrooms (MMs) contain polysaccharides, lysozymes and triterpenes, which have antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-tumor properties. Some mushrooms contain compounds that stimulate the immune system, and assist healing of the liver, kidneys, and heart tissues.

The most common use of medicinal mushrooms today is in the treatment and prevention of cancers. In addition, they can help in areas of immune and digestive health, normal cell growth, promoting the normal detoxification process, helping to protect against environmental stressors, and even joint and respiratory health. The most well-known MMs include: Reishi, Maitake, Shiitake, Chaga, Coriolus, Lion’s Mane, King Trumpet and Turkey Tail.

Joint Support

As our pets are living longer, issues such as osteoarthritis have become very common in dogs and even cats. Two of the most important things you can do to help your arthritic pet is to feed a low carbohydrate food (raw is best), and keep your pet’s weight down. Grains, carbohydrates and sugars fuel inflammation which makes the pain of arthritis worse. Also, an overweight pet puts much undue stress on joints. The standard rule is that you should be able to feel your pet’s ribs easily by running your hand over his or her side. If you have to push your fingers into fat to feel ribs, your pet is overweight.

So, what does this have to do with joint supplements? Just like in any holistic treatment, you must treat the whole animal. Joint supplements work best when used in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise program. Even the best joint supplement in the world will not work well if your pet is severely overweight.

The best joint supplements use multiple ingredients synergistically to achieve the highest anti-inflammatory and pain relief results. For example, dog biscuits containing only “glucosamine” will never work as well as a more concentrated formula including glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM, turmeric, Ester-C, Yucca schidigera, and probiotics–all of which have anti-inflammatory properties and support the body as a whole.

CBD (cannabidiol)

CBD is a compound found in cannabis and hemp. Recently products including CBD have become more widely available for pets, and Lovable Pets is at the forefront in making these easily available to our customers. The benefits of CBD oil for pets are so numerous, and no one could have summed them up better than Dogs Naturally Magazine:

The reality is that due to the quality of our soil today and the toxins that are present all around us, whole food vitamin supplementation has become almost a necessity for overall health. And, this bears true for our pets as well, most importantly when they are eating a processed diet (ex: dry kibble). While all commercial pet foods contain vitamins, these vitamins are almost all “Synthetic vitamins.” Synthetic vitamins were never alive nor part of anything alive. That’s what synthetic means: it occurs nowhere in nature. Synthetic vitamins are chemicals and the body recognizes them as chemicals. Animals who are already suffering from allergies and illness may have a harder time benefiting from synthetics. Whole food vitamins are a much better choice!

“Real”, or “whole food” vitamins are living complexes that contribute to other living complexes like cell repair, circulatory activities and collagen production. They coexist in food with other living complexes like enzymes and essential trace minerals and they all function synergistically.

When choosing a multi-vitamin to complement your pet’s diet, it’s best to choose one that comes from whole foods like raw milk, spirulina, fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and other natural food ingredients.

Bone Broth
Healthy Tummy:

Bone broth helps heal and coat the intestinal lining, providing easily digestible micronutrients to strengthen and soothe the gut. A leaky gut consists of small holes in the intestinal lining that allow particles, such as bacteria and undigested food, to pass through the intestinal lining and into the bloodstream. When this matter enters a dog’s body, an inflammatory response follows and what develops are chronic conditions, autoimmune disorders, allergies, skin conditions, anxiety, food sensitivities, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), constipation, diarrhea, and a myriad of other chronic conditions. Stress, poor diet and bacterial overgrowth can cause the holes to open or to become bigger. Bone broth is loaded with gelatin (extracted collagen), a sticky substance that plugs up those leaky holes. *

Liver Detox:

Our pets’ livers often manage a daily onslaught of toxins – lawn chemicals, processed food, vaccines and parasite medications. The liver’s capacity to detoxify is limited by the availability of the amino acid glycine. Bone broth is rich in bioavailable glycine.

Immune System Support:

Bone broth is concentrated with valuable amino acids such as glycine and proline, promoting production of glutathione (nature’s powerful antioxidant) which aids the liver in detoxification, supports healthy lungs, wound healing and resistance to disease.

Reduced Inflammation:

Chronic inflammation often has no early warning signs, which can make it difficult to detect. This is why adding anti-inflammatory nutrients to your pet’s diet is necessary for disease prevention and overall health. Bone broth contains several anti-inflammatory nutrients, such as glycine, proline, and arginine, essential amino acids needed to prevent the development of inflammatory illnesses and diseases. Inflammation affects our pets’ health the same way it affects us. The development of several conditions that affect dogs, such as allergies, rheumatoid arthritis, type II diabetes, pancreatitis, liver disease and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have all been linked to chronic inflammation.

Healthy Joints and Bones:

Bone Broth is loaded with glycosaminoglycans and you are probably familiar with one of them: glucosamine. Bone broth contains tons of glucosamine; it’s also packed with other joint-protecting compounds such as chondroitin sulfate and hyaluronic acid, giving cartilage its resilience. Hyaluronic acid from natural dietary sources is known to help reduce joint pain and stiffness, and may help prevent conditions such as osteoarthritis.

Fish Oil

The Omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA are two powerhouses in helping maintain naturally healthy skin, lustrous coat, healthy joints and a sound cardiovascular system. DHA has also been shown to be very beneficial for the nervous system, eyes, and for maintaining a naturally high fertility status.

Fish oil is good for dogs – and cats! Veterinarians first used omega-3 fatty acids in the form of fish oil to treat canine allergies but now recommend it for a wide variety of conditions ranging from kidney disease to arthritis and high cholesterol. When added to your pet’s diet, fish oil for dogs provides anti-inflammatory effects and can help relieve itching due to atopic dermatitis, an allergy-related skin condition.

It is important to note that even if you feed your pet a food containing fish, there is not a significant enough amount of oil in the food, so it is still advisable to include a fish oil supplement on top of that. In fact, we’ll go as far to say that almost every dog or cat–no matter what food they eat–and as long as they don’t have food allergies related to fish, will benefit from Omega-3 supplementation.
