As the popularity of new CBD products increases, I’ve started to see it added as an ingredient in a variety of CBD foods and beverages such as coffee, chocolates, brownies, and gummy candies.

A recent phase I clinical trial found that when CBD is taken with a high-fat meal, its bioavailability is increased by approximately four or five times [1].

As a clinical nutritionist, I find this news very exciting, as it means the rate CBD is absorbed in the target tissues is increased considerably when taken with food.

The question is: “how can I incorporate CBD into my cooking?”

Let’s take a look at CBD in more detail and how it can be added to your daily diet to take advantage of its many health benefits.

First of All, What Is CBD?

The plant Cannabis sativa contains over 80 biologically active chemicals called cannabinoids.

The two most studied cannabinoids are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). Both compounds interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS).

Endocannabinoids are created naturally within the human body, and their receptors are found throughout many organs, regulating biological processes such as sleep, appetite, mood, memory, and immune function.

CBD is the main non-psychoactive cannabinoid and is considered safe at high doses. Plus, it does not have the intoxicating psychological side-effects of THC.

The ECS plays an essential role in maintaining homeostasis; basically, its job is to monitor the body’s internal conditions continuously, keeping it in a state of balance.

This system is made up of receptors known as CB1 and CB2 receptors — found throughout the human body — in the organs, brain, connective tissue, glands, and immune cells.

CBD is extracted from the cannabis plant but can also be made synthetically. We use it primarily to treat conditions such as epileptic seizures, pain, anxiety, depression, and insomnia, as well as the debilitating side-effects of cancer treatment.

Cooking with CBD is one of the easiest ways to introduce the compound into your daily health routine.

Here’s how to get started:

1. Add CBD to Oils and Fats

CBD is lipid-soluble, which means it’s easy to add to most recipes when combined with healthy fats — such as olive oil, coconut oil, coconut butter, grass-fed butter, or ghee.

PRO TIP: add CBD to your favorite healthy cooking oil — such as olive oil or coconut oil — and drizzle over your meals. It’s especially good on salads.

Adding garlic or chili will add a warming effect. Just make sure you shake well before using, so the CBD is evenly distributed.

You can add CBD to virtually any meal — even if it isn’t high in fat.

However, anything without a high-fat content will involve more whisking to get the CBD to distribute more evenly.

In a mason jar or other container with a tight lid, combine all the ingredients. Shake until all ingredients are combined.

  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • 30 mg CBD


Process nuts and cacao powder in a high-speed blender or food processor until crumbly. Add vanilla and dates and mix.

Form into balls and roll in coconut, dates, seeds, cacao, crushed nuts, or goji berries…the options are endless!

4. Add CBD to Your Morning Smoothie or Turmeric Lattes

Why not start the day with a simple breakfast smoothie? CBD and a tablespoon of coconut oil, avocado, yogurt or coconut milk — plus fresh berries — will give an anti-inflammatory boost to your day.

A) CBD Smoothie Recipe


  • 1 cup almond/coconut milk
  • 1 frozen banana
  • ½ cup blueberries
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • 1 tbsp almond butter
  • 30 mg CBD


Blend all ingredients on high speed for 30 seconds.

B) Turmeric Milk Recipe


  • 1 cup almond/coconut milk
  • ½ tsp organic ground or grated fresh turmeric
  • Pinch of organic ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp natural vanilla essence
  • 1 tsp coconut oil
  • 1 tsp raw honey (optional)
  • 30 mg CBD


  1. Whiz all the ingredients in a blender (this makes it nice and frothy).
  2. Pour into a saucepan over low heat, gently stir, and bring to the boil.
  3. Allow it to cool a little before serving.

Alternatively, whisk all the ingredients in the saucepan over low heat, gently bringing to the boil.

Make sure you read the instructions on the label of your CBD product, considering the dosage for each portion.

Tips For Using CBD in Food

Adding CBD to your meal is simple, but there are some critical points to remember if you want to get the most out of your CBD.

1. Watch the Temperature

Don’t use CBD over direct heat.

Cannabinoids are sensitive to light and heat, so be mindful of cooking at low temperatures. Although warming CBD increases its effectiveness, heating it at high temperatures (above 365 degrees Fahrenheit or 185 degrees Celsius) causes it to lose valuable terpenes, which are diverse organic compounds that work in tandem with the CBD to increase its therapeutic effects.

Adding too much heat can also cause the CBD to break down into smaller, less potent compounds.

2. Pay Attention to the Dose

If you’re a first-time user of CBD, it’s essential to start with a low dose in your recipes until you know how your body responds to it.

Perhaps you can start cooking in smaller batches using conservative amounts of CBD until you find what works for you. This will also avoid wasting your CBD. You can always increase the amount you add over time as you find your optimal personal dose.

As you get used to using CBD in your recipes, you will get an idea of what works for you and your taste preference.

The best option is to use good-quality odorless and flavorless CBD oil. Inferior oils may have artificial additives or low cannabidiol content.

Always consider the potency of the product you’re using before adding it to your food. The potency of a teaspoon of low-strength (10 mg/mL) oil will be very different than a teaspoon of a high-potency oil (33.3 mg/mL).

Below is a chart outlining the recommended dose ranges depending on the strength you’re looking for. Here, we describe how this dose can change depending on the potency of the oil you’re using.

For example, a high-strength dose will require 15 mL of a low-potency oil, but only 5 mL of a high-potency oil.

Taking these doses into account, you can determine how much CBD you should be adding to your food. If you’re making a larger batch of something, such as cookies, you can calculate the number of servings and add enough CBD to be divided into each serving.

For example, if you’re baking enough cookies for eight people, you should add eight doses of CBD at the desired strength.

3. Store Your CBD Correctly

As CBD is sensitive to light, storing your CBD in a dark, cool place will ensure it keeps its taste and quality. It will also reduce waste due to spoilage.

Is CBD Safe?

  3. For the shrimp pasta: in a large pot, boil water over medium heat and add the uncooked penne pasta. Cook according to package directions.

  • 7 cups tomato pulp
  • ⅓ cup onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tsp dried basil
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • ½ tsp pepper
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 lb ground beef (lean)
  • 1 lb spicy Italian sausage
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • ⅓ cup onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp pepper
  • 2 large eggs

  1. Place all the sauce ingredients in the slow cooker and stir to combine
  2. Set the slow cooker to high and cover until your done preparing the meatballs (30 minutes should suffice).
  3. Mix all meatball ingredients excluding the mozzarella in a large bowl. Using your hands, work with the mass as if you were making pizza dough.
  4. Take a golf ball-sized piece of the beef mixture and place a piece of mozzarella in the center.
  5. Press the beef around the mozzarella piece until fully enclosed. Repeat until you run out of meat.
  6. Transfer the meatballs into the slow cooker and immerse in the sauce. Cover and continue cooking on high for up to 2 ½ hours.

6. CBD-infused Steak & Veggie Buddha Bowl

Looking for a healthier way to consume your meat for dinner? This indulgent recipe is easy to cook, and the CBD-infused steak and veggie buddha bowl is an invaluable source of protein enriched with pure CBD isolate.

  • Rib Eye steak, cooked to your preferred doneness
  • ½ red onion, cut into wedges
  • 1 large sweet potato, cubed
  • 230g broccoli, chopped (stems removed)
  • 2 handfuls of kale (stems removed)

  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp pepper
  • 1 can (425g) chickpeas, drained, rinsed, and patted dry

    1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
    2. Lay a bare baking sheet with sweet potatoes and onions.
    3. Add a bit of olive oil and make sure all veggies are well coated.
    4. Roast for 8–10 minutes
    5. While the veggies are sitting in the oven, heat a large heavy-bottom skillet over medium heat. In the meantime, toss the chickpeas with seasonings in a mixing bowl.
    6. Once the skillet is hot, add 1 tbsp of olive and chickpeas and saute, stirring constantly. Cook for about 10 minutes and set aside.
    7. Take the veggies from the oven after 8–10 minutes, flip sweet potatoes on the other side and add broccoli. Bake for another 10 minutes.
    8. Remove the vegetables from the oven and add kale. Drizzle the kale with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Bake for 5 minutes then set aside.
    9. Serve your steak on a plate, add the vegetables, and top with chickpeas and tahini sauce. Enjoy your meal!

      • ½ cup almond butter
      • ½ cup coconut sugar
      • 90mL melted CBD coconut oil
      • 1 cup almond flour
      • 1 tbsp coconut flour
      • 1 tsp cinnamon powder
      • 1 tsp vanilla bean paste
      • 1 large egg
      • 1 tsp baking soda
      • ¾ cup dark chocolate chips
      1. Preheat your oven to 350F
      2. Line an 8×8 baking sheet with non-stick parchment paper. You may want to spay the pan prior to using the paper so that it sticks to the pan.
      3. Mix all of the ingredients in a large bowl.
      4. Gently fold in the chocolate chips using a wooden or silicone spatula.
      5. Bake for 20-25.
      6. Take your cookie bars out of the oven and let them cool off to room temperature. Divide them into several pieces according to your liking.

      8. Cookies & Cream CBD Cheesecake Bites

      Do we have any cheesecake aficionados out there? Good, because this sugar-free CBD oil recipe is, at the same time, a truly tantalizing dessert. It gets creamy texture thanks to the combination of cream cheese and almond milk, and a cookie crunch from cacao and almond mixture.

      Cookie Base:

      • ½ cup almond flour
      • 4 tbsp cocoa powder (unsweetened)
      • ½ tsp Vanilla extract
      • 1 tsp baking powder
      • 1 egg (beaten)
      • 1 tbsp coconut oil or clarified butter

      Cream Cheese Filling:

      • ½ cup almond butter
      • 1 cup cream cheese
      • ¼ tsp vanilla extract
      • Pinch of vanilla bean paste
      • 5 full droppers of CBD oil
      1. For the dough: Preheat the oven to 300 F.
      2. In a medium bowl, combine the almond flour, cocoa, vanilla extract, salt, and baking powder. Add the egg along with coconut oil and stir well until combined.
      3. Scoop out the cookies and place each piece on a prepared sheet of parchment paper. They should be about 1–2 inches wide when pressed down.
      4. Bake the cookies in the oven for 12–15 minutes or until they get crispy.
      5. Let the cookies cool down to room temperature. They will crisp up as they lose the heat, so don’t panic if they are softer at the beginning.
      6. For the filling: Combine all the ingredients in the bowl of a stand mixer and mix until smooth.
      7. Fold in half of the crumbled cookies and stir until well incorporated.
      8. Scoop out one ball of the cheesecake filling and empty the scoop right on top of the remaining cookie crumbles. Roll to make sure the cream cheese mass is covered in the cookies.
      9. Move your cheesecake bites to the freezer (or fridge if you don’t mind waiting a bit longer). Serve cold.

      9. Pumpkin Spice Latte Loaf with CBD Icing

      We’ve got a drool-worthy treat for all our nuts- and seed-free CBD users. This CBD-infused recipe is paleo and gluten-free, and it uses delicious CBD icing instead of altering CBD oil by baking it into this delicious pumpkin loaf.

      • 1 tbsp apple cider
      • 1 tsp baking soda
      • 4 medium eggs
      • 1 cup pumpkin puree
      • ½ cup yuca-root flour
      • 1 tsp espresso powder
      • 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice

      CBD sugar-free icing:

      • 1 tbsp CBD coconut oil
      • ¼ cup coconut butter
      1. Preheat the oven to 350F
      2. Combine the apple cider with baking soda in a bowl and let the mixture fizz. Stir in eggs and mix with a stand mixer until peaks form.
      3. Mix in the remaining ingredients until well combined.
      4. Line a bread loaf pan with parchment paper and pour the prepared batter into the dish.
      5. Bake for about 30 minutes. Allow the loaf to cool in the freezer for 30 minutes.
      6. For the icing: melt the coconut butter with the CBD coconut oil over low heat until combined and pour over the loaf.

      This drink is an amazing alternative to coffee for those who are already naturally stimulated during the day. It combines unsweetened milk with raw cocoa powder and full-spectrum CBD oil for a warm treat that delivers all the benefits of CBD to your body. The recipe allows the user to stay Bulletproof thanks to the use of non-GMO erythritol.

      11. CBD Whipped Cream

      Who doesn’t like a dollop of CBD-infused whipped cream added to their Thanksgiving desserts? Even if Thanksgiving isn’t your favorite holiday, you can indulge in this sinful whipped cream with any dessert you like. You can even dip strawberries and other fruits in it — it’s up to you!

      • 2 cups whipping cream
      • 2 tsp vanilla extract
      • ¼ cup white sugar (or icing sugar)
      • 0.33g CBD isolate powder
      1. Grab a large mixing bowl and place it in a freezer for 20 minutes so the dish chills.
      2. Once cold, remove the bowl from the freezer and add whipping cream, sugar, vanilla extract, and your CBD isolate powder.
      3. Whip the ingredients on high speed using an electric hand mixer and lower the speed as the mixture thickens. Make sure not to over whip it, as you may end up with CBD-infused sweet butter (it doesn’t sound tasty, does it?)
      4. Serve over your favorite desserts.

      12. CBD Chocolate Coconut Fat Bombs

      Take a couple of deep breaths because your eyes are going to pop once you try these delicious CBD-infused coconut fat bombs. Easy to make and a bit more difficult to deny, they are the perfect way to make you feel satisfied until your next meal.

      • 20mg of CBD oil (about 2 full droppers)
      • ½ cup coconut butter
      • ½ cup coconut oil
      • ½ cup raw cocoa powder
      • 1 teaspoon honey
      1. Place a saucepan over low heat and melt the coconut oil until fully liquified. Whisk in the cocoa powder until all lumps are gone. Add the honey and stir again until well combined.
      2. Evenly pour the cocoa mixture into 6 cups of a silicone muffin pan. Transfer the batter to the refrigerator for about 30 minutes or until the batter becomes firm.
      3. In another saucepan, melt the coconut butter. Remove from the heat and whisk in CBD oil.
      4. Take out the muffin mold from the refrigerator and add the coconut butter mixture on the top of each cup. Refrigerate for another 30 hours or until everything solidifies.
      5. Store the fat bombs in the refrigerator.

      Making CBD-infused recipes at home is a fun and very rewarding way to deliver precious cannabinoids into your system. If you need your CBD to release at a slower pace than when you vape it or use it sublingually — and keep you ailment-free for the whole day — CBD edibles are the way to go.

      So, You Want to Cook With CBD? These Are the Golden Rules to Follow

      O nce edgy and under-the-radar, CBD has officially become mainstream. CBD tinctures and gummies are likely already part of your holistic toolkit to deal with cramps, anxiety, or trouble sleeping. But the next level of using and enjoying the popular cannabinoid: incorporating it into foods and drinks.

      Maybe the idea of CBD-infused foods freak you out. But having anxiety about cooking with CBD is not only ironic, it’s unnecessary, because this primer has everything you need to know. From the best foods to start with to the rules to follow to ensure you’re not just washing your money down the drain, consider this the complete ABCs to cooking with CBD. Soon you’ll be able to switch up your CBD habit to be as delicious as it is functional. (Any scientists out there want to study the effectiveness of CBD brownies as a PMS remedy? Get at me.)

      The golden rules of cooking with CBD

      1. Don’t waste your pricey tinctures on cooking

      While you may already be the proud owner of a CBD tincture, The Ultimate Guide to CBD author Jamie Evans, aka The Herb Somm, says there are more cost-effective ways to infuse your food rather than using up your precious vials. The easiest, she says, is to buy a CBD-infused olive oil that’s ready to cook with.

      “These are becoming easier to find, but since CBD is still widely unregulated, you want to look for one that’s organically grown so that there’s less of a chance of it including pesticides,” Evans says. The dosage per serving should always be on the bottle; she recommends a dosage of between 15 to 30 milligrams per serving for newbies. Her favorite brand is Pot d’Huile Hemp Infused Olive Oil ($36).

      Basically, unless all you plan on infusing is a smoothie or a vinaigrette, Evans recommends saving your CBD tinctures in favor for a pre-infused oil.

      2. Be Wary of heat

      Evans says that cooking heat can potentially make CBD less effective. “If exposed to overheating, the effects will burn off,” she says, adding that she recommends staying below 320˚F.

      However, because CBD in baked goods is still a relatively new territory, other experts aren’t sure about the impact of heat. “It’s hard to say and is still unknown what happens to the potency of CBD oil when it’s heated at a certain temperatures while cooking or baking,” says Liz Sprinkle, the founder of CBD brand Love Always, Liz.

      To be safe, “I recommend adding CBD oil after the food you are preparing has been removed from a hot surface or oven to preserve the integrity of the plant compounds,” Sprinkle says. “For instance, instead of mixing CBD oil into cake batter before it’s baked, add it to the icing that will go on the cake.” This way, you’re more likely to get the most out of the oil.

      3. Be sure to incorporate healthy fats

      Evans says CBD is fat-soluble—meaning that your body absorbs it best when paired with fat-containing foods—which is another reason why she’s a fan of oil-infusions. “Cannabinoids [like CBD] are really drawn to fats,” she says. Whatever oil you’re into most—olive, coconut, MCT, avocado—having it as a carrier is what’s going to make the CBD most effective.

      4. be patient With the effects

      Evans says that consuming CBD in food will take your body longer to digest than a dropper full of tincture under your tongue—so be patient. “When you’re infusing it in food, there’s what’s called the ‘first pass effect,’ which means that anything digestible has to pass through your gut and liver first before reaching your bloodstream,” she says. “So [CBD in food] not going to be as potent or as quick-acting.”

      5. be mindful with what you consume it with

      While Evans says there aren’t any studies saying that CBD is harmful when consumed with alcohol—and even says it can be fun to experiment with CBD cocktails—it’s always a good idea to be mindful of your intake. “And of course if you’re consuming CBD with any alcohol, don’t drive,” she says. If you plan on serving food with CBD to friends, Evans says it’s important to tell them in advance (along with the dosage) as CBD can interact with some medications.

      The best foods to start cooking with

      Sprinkle and Evans both recommend starting with something you’re already familiar with, such as using your CBD-infused oil to top off a salad. If you want to use a tincture instead of an infused oil, Sprinkle recommends adding a few drops to a beverage. “I really love adding CBD oil to my favorite beverages such as Bulletproof coffee, smoothie recipes, and fun cocktails because it’s so easy and quick acting,” Sprinkle says.

      Once you have beverages down, you can get as creative as you want. (Just keep in mind how heating affects the outcome.) Evans says she’s a fan of using CBD oil in sauces, like pesto, drizzled over pasta. Sprinkle says she likes using it to make a red wine mushroom reduction to serve over steak. And of course she’s a fan of using it in baked goods too; CBD brownies was the food she experimented with first.

      Strawberry CBD smoothie

      1 cup packed kale leaves or other dark leafy greens
      1/4 cup packed fresh basil leaves
      1/3 cup fresh or frozen strawberries, tops included
      1/4 medium avocado, pitted and peeled
      1 dried fig
      Juice of 1/2 lime (about 1 Tbsp)
      1/4 tsp sea salt
      1 Tbsp honey, maple syrup, or agave nectar (optional)
      1 drop high-quality CBD oil
      1/4 cup ice cubes

      1. In a high-speed blender, combine the kale, basil, strawberries, avocado, fig, lime juice, salt, honey (if using), CBD oil, and half cup water. Blend until smooth.

      2. Pour into a glass over ice and enjoy, or pout into a jar or bottle with a lid, store in the refrigerator, and drink within a couple of hours. Shake well before drinking.
